Singapore’s Solution to Crime
I found this headline on Yahoo! and immediately recalled the harsh criticism Singapore received when they caned two boys for vandalism. This time, an Australian was executed for drug traffiking, despite many appeals from the Aussie government. The young man got to visit with his family, which I felt was very generous of the Singaporean government.
There are many bleeding hearts out there that are crying for him right now, as they did for those boys who got caned. I’m not one of them. In fact, I feel relieved to know that there is one less scumbag in the world. You know the old saying: Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.

Oh, I’ve had this argument about the Singaporean justice system. On the one hand corporeal punishment is beyond my understanding. On the other hand, it works. Singapore has very little crime. Yet, one wrong conviction is enough for me not to support the death penalty.

Is corporeal punishment a deterrent against crime? Not always, as you pointed out. But it serves as a deterrent for the majority.
As for that kid, I’m 90% positive that he would have returned to his “trade”, had he been allowed to live. I think of all the lives that the Singaporean government has saved by killing him.

Apparently, the man was trying to get his brother out of debt. There’s been an uproar here because of it, but the way I see it…he knew the consequences and shouldn’t have done it if he wasn’t prepared to face the penalty. Everyone knows what that penalty is, so there’s no excuse.

Yep. Singapore was the last place he should have been traffiking.
