Scary Movies
Can you believe we’re going to be celebrating another Halloween? Other than taking the kids trick-or-treating, we generally don’t do anything but pass out candy to the rest of the kids. Last year, we broke our couch potato tradition by going to a party. I’m not sure what we’re going to do this year.
I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Halloween than watching scary movies. Here is a list of my top 5 faves.
1. The Grudge: This is the first movie that creeped me out as an adult. I’m looking forward to watching the sequel, which comes out on my youngest son’s birthday (Friday the 13th!).
2. The Shining: Not the wimpy remake, but the Stanley Kubrick classic. Heerre’s Johnny!
3. The Thing: I’ve never seen the original movie, but loved the remake with Kurt Russel and Wilford Brimley. Watching the Quaker Oatmeal guy (Brimley) have a nervous breakdown added volumes to the tension.
4. Prince of Darkness: This movie scared my husband because he believes in the Anti-Christ.
5. What Lies Beneath: This was one of the best psychological thriller/ghost stories I’ve seen in quite a while.
What are your favorites?

I actually thought What Lies Beneath was pretty boring. I had the ending pegged about halfway through.
The movies I’ve seen that I thought were pretty scary were the Alien Quartet and the first Friday the 13th moive. AQ I’d watch again all the way through; Freddy Krueger has no place in my movie library. He seriously creeped me out, probably there were literally no limits to the kind of torture he could visit on his victims.

Gotta go with “The Exorcist” and “Alien”.
Another creepy movie was “They Watch”…
Not splatter gore but more dark psychological matter.
I’ve yet to see the original “Grudge”.
I love horror but have given up lately because everything out there is anything but.
Is “The Grudge” worth a look?

Thought you might get a kick out of this link (unless you’ve already seen it)

Jim: I enjoyed the first Alien movie more because of the psychological horror. Writing this, I can picture Sigourney Weaver wimpering as the snot from the alien drops next to her face.
Michael: Grudge is definitely worth a look. Thanks for the link!

You have good taste in horror movies. All of those movies you mention with the exception of What lies beneath are amongst my favorites. I agree with you about The Grudge, very creepy. You should check out the Japanese version called Ju-on. They carry it at Blockbuster. I thought that it was scarier than the American version but maybe that’s because I saw the japanese version first. The Thing is also a favorite of mine.
I would add to your list:
In the Mouth of Madness - Great Lovecraft-inspired movie by John Carpenter.
Ju-on 2: The japanese sequel to the Grudge. It’s mostly more of the same but it still scared the pants off of me.

Thank you, Fred.
I’ll have to check out Ju-on. I’d totally forgotten about In the Mouth of Madness! That was great movie, too.
