Blog Upgrades and Overhauls

by deborah.woehr on July 11, 2009

Last night I began fiddling around with themes, testing them out and chucking them until I found the one that you’re looking at now. My highest priority was finding a theme that I can customize for my How to Create a Custom Twitter Background, blog so that it integrates nicely with my ecommerce site. I still have a lot of work to do to get that looking right. And, I’m not happy with the logo on this site. So, I still have some work to do on this site, including long overdue “housecleaning.”

While I was at it, I went ahead and upgraded both of these blogs. I wasn’t able to upgrade to version 2.8.1 on my Twitter background blog due to memory problems (I’m thinking). However, I love the fact that I could install plug-ins and themes directly from the WordPress admin panel. This is a huge improvement over the prior versions. I was able to upgrade directly to 2.8.1 on this blog with the press of a button, although things got a bit rocky when the wheel kept spinning and nothing happened. For a minute there, I envisioned having to upload the backup and start over, a nightmare process that I remember all to well. Fortunately, the system upgraded and was just being slow.

The system continued to bog down as I checked on and installed new plug-ins. I’ll have to check it later and possibly uninstall plug-ins if I’m dealing with a memory issue. I like the new interface, especially now that they have gotten rid of the garish orange and returned to blue. The interface hasn’t changed since 2.7.1, which I appreciate. The last time they did a major interface overhaul (2.6), I hated having to hunt for things that used to be plainly visible, such as the theme editor. So, I like the fact that they left that alone.

I’m loving 2.8.1 too, especially the instant install themes and plug-ins. It helped updating my design greatly too.

I love what you did with your blog, Ben. :) It looks really sharp. Yeah, I enjoy being able to install themes and plug-ins directly from the interface. Unlike FTP uploading, the installations are pretty quick.

Deborah,

I like how your blog continues to evolve. Especially like the layout on this one. Wordpress seems to allow more latitude with creative design than Blogger does. Good to see you are keeping up.

Thanks Deborah. I feel like it matches me much better.

Which plug-in are you using for the social-networking stuff.

And are you using tags?

Hi, Scot! It’s great to see you again. :) Hope you and your family are doing well. I agree with you about WordPress versus Blogger. WP is much easier to customize, both in design and plug-in customization.

Hey, Ben! I’m using tags, but I don’t if they’re doing much in the way of drawing people to this blog. For the social networking, I use Sociable.

I’m going to have to install sociable. Do you know if the wordpress tags get picked up by technorati?

I need to find that out. It’s been so long since I used Technorati.

I love this theme, Deborah. It looks so clean and smart, and the colours are cool. :D

Enjoy your trip away with the family. I hope you have good weather and lots of fun.

Thanks, Karen! :D Welcome back! I’ll make sure to post some pictures of my trip and share some info about Hearst Castle when I come back. It’s a neat place.
