Duma Key: Satisfyingly Creepy

Stephen King draws a lot from his experience with his accident when he fleshed out the character of Edgar Freemantle. Freemantle was the owner of his own construction company until a crane crushed him inside his truck and changed his life forever. Duma Key, by Stephen King
I recommend Duma Key because it’s one of more satisfyingly original books that I’ve read of his in a long time. I felt like I was there with Freemantle as he was dealing with the aftermath of his accident, when he moved down to a place called Big Pink in Florida, his psychic visions not only of his daughter and ex-friend/business associate, etc. King did an excellent job of portraying the Floridian culture, and I found myself fascinated not only by the house called Big Pink but Elizabeth (Libbit) Eastlake and her family’s spooky history. He kept me captivated until I read the last page.

After reading this book, I am very much looking forward to reading Under the Dome!

  1. It’s interesting how he uses his accident a lot in some of his fiction. There’s this, his TV series Kingdom Hospital also draws from his experience, and I’m sure there’s at least one other.

Anyway, haven’t read this one but will be reading Under the Dome soon.

I’ll have to rent his Kingdom Hospital series on NetFlix. Let me know how you like Under the Dome. :) Have you read anything by his son, Joe Hill? If you get a chance, read Heart Shaped Box.

  3. Kingdom Hospital is definitely recommended. It’s so strange and surreal.

I love Heart-Shaped Box and have seen his new one, Horns in Borders so will have to get through my to-read list.

Then I’ll definitely have to watch it! :) I’m reading Horns right now. So far, I’m enjoying it.

  5. I must live with my head in a box, because I haven’t heard of this book until now. I’ve enjoyed the books I have read by Stephen King so I’m sure this one will be good too. I’ll put it on my list.

I didn’t know that his son writes too. That’s interesting. I’ll have to watch for those books too.

They’re a very talented family. I need to finish Horns and Shutter Island before I start reading Under the Dome. Horns is good so far, but I got pulled in by Shutter Island over the weekend and can’t stop reading that.

Almost forgot about Tabitha’s book, Candles Burning. That has a wonderful paranormal atmosphere.
