I played around with the trial version of Artisteer on my husband’s laptop last Friday and liked what I was able to do. Once I finished the preliminary design, I exported it into the WordPress format and uploaded it to see what it looked like. Other than the watermark going down both sidebars, the design looked great.

You can also use this program to create Joomla and Drupal themes, which I think makes this program quite versatile. I’m very tempted to get it because I’m still not happy with the theme I modified for my Twitter background blog and can’t find any free themes that jump out at me. Since I’ve yet to master coding, Artisteer is perfect because I can focus on the artistic side of theme creation and let the program build the code. However, I will need to modify the code so that custom background images can fit properly with the overall theme.

Out of the box, you can:

1. Import images to go in the header.
2. Change the colors of your theme by either using the Suggest tool or manually.
3. Change the layout to 1, 2, or 3-column. You can use the Suggest tool to see a variety of combinations.
4. Change the fonts for your header, posts, etc.

Artisteer is available for both Mac and PC, but Mac users will need to install Leopard before they can use it. If you’re interested in creating your own themes, check out the video above and then visit the forum to see what users have to say, both good and bad. I like the fact that they have a great support community.
